As an explorer in three realms–actual, virtual, and ideal–I find my most useful approach to understanding the new, or reconsidering a sticking point yet unresolved, is through the application of insight gained in one of those realms to the concern at hand in another. I’ve worked in the information industry for over 30 years. And yes, both the library work I’ve undertaken and the library instruction I facilitate are evergreen industries: energized activities that make something (however virtual or ideal) from the raw actualities of knowledge and experience. The analogy is my can opener: when a path becomes clear in one realm, it takes me to the trailhead in another; it makes “can” possible.
